USS Louisiana (BB-71) was to be the fifth and final Montana-class battleship. This type of battleships was to be complemented by the Iowa type units. Compared to their predecessors, the Montana-class ships would be much better armed and armored, but would have a slower maximum speed. However, in the light of the experience of the battles in the Coral Sea and Midway, the American admiralty focused on the development of aircraft carriers. Thus, in July 1943, the construction of the USS Louisiana was canceled.
