The Fairey Battle Mk.I stands as one of the most poignant aircraft of the early Second World War. Conceived in the mid-1930s as a modern, high-speed light bomber for the Royal Air Force, it embodied the optimism of pre-war aviation design with its sleek lines and Merlin engine performance. When war came in 1939–40, however, the realities of modern air combat quickly overtook its concept. During the Battle of France, Battle crews flew low-level daylight missions against heavily defended targets, suffering heavy losses but earning lasting respect for their determination and courage in the face of overwhelming odds.
