These 1960s-era solid-floored, rotary-dump cars were used by the Pennsy and its successors to haul iron ore from Great Lakes ports to inland steel mills in Pennsylvania and Ohio. They were also used to haul steel coils and scrap. After several years of service, some G39s had their Crown trucks replaced with more modern trucks. This allowed for a capacity increase to 77 tons, and accordingly the cars were given the G39B designation.
