The Canadian Leopard 1 C2 is an updated German Leopard 1A5 turret added to the original hulls from 1978 with Leopard 2 fire control EMES 18 fire-control system, which was developed in Germany in the 1980s. The deployed Leopard C2 MEXAS tanks were fitted with MEXAS appliqué modular armor. The Modular Expandable Armor System (MEXAS) is a composite armor system developed by the German company IBD Deisenroth Engineering. Those tanks remained in service under combat operations serving next to the Leopard 2A6M’s until late June 2011, when combat operations ceased for the Canadian contingent.
