The F/A-18D ATARS (Advanced Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance System) transformed the two-seat Hornet into a highly capable reconnaissance platform for the U.S. Marine Corps, providing real-time battlefield intelligence through advanced electro-optical and infrared sensors. Developed as a replacement capability for the retired RF-4B Phantom II, the ATARS-equipped Hornet combined the versatility of the F/A-18 airframe with sophisticated surveillance technology while retaining the aircraft’s ability to perform combat missions.
