Dassault Mirage F-1 was developed to replace the renowned delta-wing supersonic fighter, the Mirage III, which had established the French aviation industry as a global benchmark in the 1960s. The Mirage F-1, in its fighter configuration, entered service with the French Air Force at the end of 1973 and, within a few years, replaced the earlier Mirage III fleet.
