With well over 25,000 cars in service, the Trinity 5161 3 bay covered hopper is one of the most commonly seen hopper cars of contemporary railroading. introduced in 1995, the curved sides are easily distinguishable from rib-sided Pullman-Standard style cars. The 5161 cubic-foot capacity and 286,000 lbs GRL of these cars allowed them to be quickly adopted by railroads and private operators alike. While mainly used for grain transport, they are used for a variety of other goods such as sugar, chemical transport, potash and fertilizer products.
