The USS Guam (CB-2) was the second and last completed ship of the Alaska-class large cruisers built for the United States Navy during World War II. Though designated as a “large cruiser”, the Alaska-class ships were effectively battlecruisers—designed to counter heavily armed enemy cruisers and commerce raiders like Germany’s Scharnhorst or Japan’s Tone-class cruisers.
