The IJN Shinano was the largest aircraft carrier built during World War II and, at the time of her completion in 1944, the largest warship in the world. She was originally laid down as the third Yamato-class battleship, but midway through construction, her hull was converted into an aircraft carrier following Japan’s carrier losses at Midway. Her service was extremely brief — just ten days — before she was sunk by a U.S. submarine.
