A standout piece of early American space history, this 1/48 scale plastic kit recreates the Jupiter C rocket that launched Explorer 1, the United States’ first satellite, into orbit on January 31, 1958. Developed from the Army’s Redstone missile under the direction of Wernher von Braun, the Jupiter C became the launch vehicle that helped establish America’s presence in the Space Race following the Soviet Union’s Sputnik success. The kit includes the rocket, launch pad and display base, two 1/48 scale Army figures, and Scale-Master decals for the distinctive black markings and “UE” identification code. At more than 12 inches tall when completed, it makes an impressive display for collectors of Cold War, missile, and early space-program subjects.
