In 1923, an A1-class locomotive rolled out of the Doncaster works. Designed by the eminent engineer Nigel Gresley, the Flying Scotsman quickly gained fame for its unprecedented performance at the time.

The locomotive holds two records for steam traction – on November 30, 1934, it became the first to officially reach a speed of 100 mph (160.9 km/h), and on August 8, 1989, during a visit to Australia, it ran 679 km without stopping.

Despite the difficult times of World War II and changes in the railway industry, the Flying Scotsman survived, was restored and to this day serves as a traveling museum. In 2023, it celebrated its 100th anniversary as an active and fully functional steam locomotive – a national treasure of Great Britain, a symbol of the steam era and the triumph of engineering.
