This Bachmann HO Scale Silver Series 40' Quad Hopper is based on cars used in the steam and classic-diesel eras. Quad, or 4-bay, hoppers hauled everything from coal to crushed stone and other aggregates. Later in their life, some cars were transitioned into maintenance-of-way use, further extending their usefulness. Today, examples can typically be found in museums and operating on photo freights with tourist railroads.
