NOS (New Old Stock)

The SD40 is a EMD six axle locomotive built by EMD from January 1966 to August 1972. During those years, nearly 1300 units were built for both the domestic and export markets. Powered by a 16 cylinder turbocharged EMD 645 prime mover, the locomotive is rated at 3000. Examples of this locomotive were used by many railroads and many units continue in service today. Many of these locomotives have been updated to SD40-2 and SD40-3 versions with improved computer control and fuel efficiency.
