Commissioned in 1940, HMS Illustrious introduced the revolutionary armored flight deck concept to carrier warfare, dramatically improving survivability under air attack. She proved the value of that design during the daring Taranto raid against the Italian fleet and later endured intense Axis bombing in the Mediterranean—damage that would have crippled lesser carriers.
