A Type B3 long-range fleet submarine, I-58 was among Japan’s most advanced submarine designs of World War II and was modified to carry the Kaiten, a manned torpedo developed for suicide attacks against Allied naval forces. During its wartime service, I-58 conducted patrols throughout the Pacific and achieved its most notable success in July 1945 when it sank the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis, one of the final major Allied naval losses of the conflict.
