A Type B3 long-range fleet submarine, I-58 represented the culmination of Japan’s efforts to develop submarines capable of extended Pacific operations, combining substantial range, powerful torpedo armament, and reconnaissance capabilities. Completed in 1944, the submarine initially served as a conventional attack boat before later being modified to carry Kaiten manned torpedoes for special attack missions. Its wartime history includes patrols across the Pacific and its controversial role in the sinking of the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis in July 1945.
