Developed as an improved successor to the original Type VII design, the Type VII B featured increased fuel capacity, greater operational range, and improved performance while maintaining the compact and versatile characteristics that defined the class. Entering service before World War II, these submarines formed an important part of the early Kriegsmarine U-boat force, achieving significant successes during the opening years of the Battle of the Atlantic. Notable Type VII B boats, including those commanded by famous U-boat commanders, played a major role in Germany’s early submarine campaigns against Allied shipping.
