The US M88A1G Bergepanzer is a German-modified version of the American M88A1 Armored Recovery Vehicle (ARV), adapted to meet the Bundeswehr’s requirements. The original M88 ARV was developed by the United States in the early 1960s to recover damaged or immobilized tanks, especially the M48 and later M60 series. Germany acquired a number of these vehicles in the 1960s–70s to support their M48A2 and M48A2GA2 tanks.
