The U.S. 3-inch Gun M5 was developed during World War II as a powerful towed anti-tank weapon capable of defeating the heavy armor fielded by Germany’s Panther and Tiger tanks. Mounted on the robust M6 split-trail carriage, the gun combined excellent long-range accuracy with high-velocity armor-piercing ammunition, making it one of the most formidable Allied anti-tank guns of the war. Although produced in more limited numbers than other U.S. anti-tank weapons, the M5 saw combat in the European Theater, where it provided valuable defensive fire against enemy armored formations.
