The Churchill Mk.III AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) was a specialized engineering variant of Britain’s legendary Churchill infantry tank, created to support Allied forces during major assault operations of World War II. Developed for the 79th Armoured Division, the AVRE replaced the standard turret armament with the formidable 290mm Petard spigot mortar, allowing it to demolish bunkers, obstacles, and fortified positions that conventional weapons struggled to overcome. These heavily armored engineering tanks played a crucial role during the D-Day landings and the advance through Normandy and Northwest Europe.
