The Achilles Mk.IIc was a British adaptation of the American M10 tank destroyer, upgraded with the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun to provide Allied forces with greater capability against heavily armored German vehicles. Developed through the conversion of existing M10 vehicles, the Achilles combined the mobility and reliability of the Sherman-based chassis with the exceptional armor penetration of Britain’s most effective anti-tank weapon of World War II. Entering service in 1944, Achilles units played an important role during the Normandy campaign and the Allied advance across Northwest Europe.
