Few armored fighting vehicles embody the turning tide of the Eastern Front like the T-34-85, an evolution of the earlier T-34 that answered the growing threat of heavier German armor in the latter half of World War II. Introduced in 1944, the upgraded 85mm gun and enlarged three-man turret dramatically improved combat effectiveness, allowing Soviet crews to better engage Panthers and Tigers on more equal terms. Combined with its sloped armor, mechanical simplicity, and ease of mass production, the design became one of the most influential tanks of the war, serving not only in Soviet ranks but across numerous postwar armies for decades.
