The Sukhoi Su-22 “Fitter” was one of the Warsaw Pact’s most recognizable ground-attack aircraft, evolving from the earlier Su-17 with variable-geometry wings that allowed it to combine high-speed strike capability with improved low-speed handling. Exported widely during the Cold War, the rugged swing-wing fighter saw service across Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, becoming a mainstay tactical strike aircraft from the 1970s onward.
