ACADEMY 12294 1/48 F-4C Jet "Vietnam War"

Model Aircraft Kit

A classic representation of one of the most hard-worked fighters of the Vietnam era, this kit offers the builder an opportunity to capture the raw power and evolving combat role of the early Phantom in Southeast Asia.

The McDonnell Douglas F-4C was the U.S. Air Force’s initial production variant of the Phantom II, adapted from the Navy’s carrier-based design for land-based operations. Entering service in the early 1960s, the F-4C quickly became a mainstay over Vietnam, flying both air superiority and ground-attack missions. Early combat experience exposed the limitations of missile-only armament, leading to the eventual reintroduction of an internal gun in later variants, but in its time, the F-4C proved formidable with its speed, payload, and advanced radar systems. It played a central role in operations such as Operation Rolling Thunder, where it faced increasingly sophisticated air defenses and enemy fighters.

Academy’s 1/48 scale kit captures the Phantom’s broad-shouldered stance and complex intake geometry with finely recessed panel lines and accurate proportions. The cockpit and landing gear are well-rendered for the scale, while the inclusion of period-appropriate ordnance allows the modeler to depict a range of mission profiles typical of the conflict. The “Vietnam War” markings provide an excellent basis for weathering, from sun-faded camouflage to the heavy staining and wear characteristic of aircraft operating from forward bases in harsh conditions.
