While the design used the running gear of the RS-11, the new model was powered by a larger 16-cylinder prime mover that generated 2400 horsepower. To accommodate its extra length, the cab was moved forward, and the front hood shortened, giving the RS-27s a very distinctive appearance. Under relentless pressure from GE and EMD, ALCO was able to sell just 27 RS-27s before production ended in 1962.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eALCO's last road switchers have long been a favorite with modelers.
