Despite 1225's later fame in both excursion and fictional passenger service, the Berks were freight-only locomotives on account of their weight, not their potential. All 39 Berks found plenty of work hustling fast freights across Michigan in the busy 1940s. Ultimately, all of the locomotives would become part of the C\u0026amp;O roster before retirement. Because of trust agreements, only the initial order of locomotives were re-lettered and numbered into the C\u0026amp;O roster.
