However, it would take nine years of development for the Merkava to be born. In the interim, Israel began buying M48s from West Germany and converting them to Israeli specifications. The name Magach (battering ram) was given to any tank based on an M48 or M60. Equipped with a 105mm main gun, a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, and two extra LMG's for the commander and loader's hatch, the vehicle was superb at taking down low-flying aircraft and facing off in close combat.
