The fuel tank improvements and armor additions made the P-40C variant heavier than earlier. The P-40 served with the British during the conflicts in North Africa and the Middle East early in WWII. Although the aircraft lacked a 2-speed supercharged engine like contemporary German aircraft, the P-40 proved a mighty low-altitude fighter. The production life of the P-40 resulted in nearly 12,000 aircraft built.
